GLOSSOP'S ANNUAL VICTORIAN WEEKEND THE FEATURE Glossop situated in the far North West of Derbyshire, is set in some of the most beautiful scenery in the Peak District National Park. A busy, bright and modern town often referred to as the Gateway to the Peak, but it is much more than a gateway and is an excellent centre for exploring the north-western side of the Dark Peak. The annual Victorian Weekend is one of the most popular events of the year in Glossop. This special weekend tradition brings in visitors from afar as the town goes back in time to Victorian Days. The event will be held over 5th Friday, 6th Saturday & 7th Sunday September 2008, in the town centre.
Courtesy of Glossop GALA The Glossop Arts and Leisure Association (GALA) plan to make the 2008 Victorian Weekend bigger and better than any previously gone by. The roads through the town centre are closed to traffic as the roads are filled with everything from Steam Wagons, Victorian fairground rides, accordion players, Punch & Judy, Stilt Walkers, Jugglers to Glossop’s very own Fire Service with their engines. There is a main stage where lots of various acts feature and Morris Dancers with their clogs entertain all. All are encouraged to get in the spirit by dressing up in Victorian Garb – there are prizes for best dressed in various categories and also for the best Victorian shop display. There are side shows of funfair rides, craft stalls, farmers market, Hog Roast and “Real Ale” tent to keep the whole family entertained.

The carnival is an annual community event held in Manor Park, a short walk from the centre. This year will be bigger and better than ever. The main attraction which we are delighted to have secured is the Tameside Sea Cadets, who will perform the "Climbing the Rigging" amazing sight to behold, recently performed in London before H.M. the Queen There is also a funfair, craft stalls, farmers market, Cheerleaders, Morris Groups, a Maypole Dance and three very different bands to create a party atmosphere – the Arnfield Brass, Glossop School Jazz Band and a Pipe Band. There will be a procession led by the Oldham Scottish Pipe Band on 05th July starting from the Town Hall Car Park, commencing at 12:30pm up to Manor Park. There will also be an RSPCA Dog Show, open to all attendees. The weekend would not be complete without the traditional Hog Roast and we hope to complement this by having a “Real Ale” Tent. There will be events on both days to entertain all the family. The three Bands will also be playing in various sets throughout the days, interspersed with performances by the Sea Cadets. Local charities can have a stall for free to raise funds for worthy causes.
