DERBY PUBS

THE ROYAL STANDARD

TO BE RE-OPENED FOLLOWING CLOSURE (INFO JANUARY 2008)

Location:  On the north side of Exeter Bridge, at the corner of Exeter Place.

Historical Information:  An attractive black and white  pub situated on a corner site facing across the River Derwent. It was erected around 1862, when it was much smaller than at present. The later amalgamation with two cottages, followed by a substantial rebuilding programme in the 1890s increased the pub's size considerably.

Sign:  Named after the Sovereign's personal flag, always flown when the King or Queen is personally present.

Curiosities:  The father of Reg Parnell, the famous Grand Prix motor racing driver, held the licence early last century.

In 1935, it was known as the 'Aquarium House' and on Sunday nights at 8.30pm the regulars used to gather to watch the fish being fed.
