DERBY PUBS

BRIDGE INN

Location:  On the eastern corner of St Mary's Bridge, with Chester Green to the north.

Historical Information:  Established in a former private house, about 60 years after the property was built in the 1790s. Named after the bridge by which it stands, but it may well have been previously in use as a pub under another name. It was always popular on Derby Regatta Days and once had a boat house of its own. The Bridge Chapel on the western side of the river was at one time used as a toll house, where a resident hermit collected tolls from people entering Derby.

Sign:  Until recent years St Mary's Bridge, used to carry the majority of traffic heading east, through Derby.

Curiosities:  For many years during the first part of the 20th century, a penny-farthing bicycle hung from one wall.
