DERBY PUBS

CROWN AND CUSHION

Location:  Occupies a prominent corner position at the junction of Midland Road and London Road.

Historical Information:  Only a short distance from the Derby Midland Railway Station,  it was built in 1853, no doubt with the intention of benefiting from the boom created by the arrival of the railway. From the time the first railway train steamed into Derby on the May 30, 1839, swarms of workers had arrived in the town.

Sign:  The name is usually associated with the monarchy, when the crown is presented on a silk tasselled cushion at coronations.

Curiosities:  Arthur Cecil Felix, the grandfather of Richard Felix the recent owner of Derby Heritage Centre, was the landlord during the Edwardian era. Richard Felix is a former star of the popular Sky TV programme, 'Most Haunted'.
