DERBY PUBS

CATTLE MARKET HOTEL

(NOW SMITHFIELD)

Location:  On Meadow Road facing the Bus Depot, close to the Derby Evening Telegraph offices.

Historical Information:  Opened in the mid-1800s as a Market Hotel. It is built in traditional style with a curving facade. Following the gradual movement away of the market from Friar Gate, the Corporation remodelled the area outside the pub to form the 'New Cattle Market'. The pub's farming trade came to an end when the market was moved again, due to the construction of the Inner Ring Road. In 1982, the pub was renamed the Smithfield.

Curiosities:

The pub was named Derby Camra Pub of the Year 2003.
